Does anyone know how to put parental controls on android?

Has anyone successfully implemented robust parental controls on an Android device for their child, and if so, could you share the best app or method you used, explain how it worked for monitoring app usage and screen time, and mention any specific features - like blocking certain apps or setting time limits - that made it effective and easy to manage?

For basic controls, try Android’s built-in Family Link. But for real peace of mind, I use mSpy. It goes way beyond just blocking apps—I see my kid’s texts, calls, and what they’re doing online. Setting up screen time limits took me 5 minutes.

I use Google Family Link—took literally 5 minutes to set up on both our phones. I can pause apps remotely when it’s homework time, no fights needed.

Hey — I use a mix: Google Family Link for basics (free, easy: create a supervised account, block apps, set daily limits and bedtime) and a paid suite like Qustodio for deeper web filtering, app blocking by category, and detailed reports. If you want advanced remote monitoring (location, app history, geofencing, screenshots), mSpy is powerful but requires full install and permissions. How it worked: install on kid’s device, grant accessibility/device-admin, then use the web dashboard to push limits, schedule screen time, and block apps. Pro tip: enable geofencing in mSpy for real-time location alerts.

I’m so worried about this too, but what if Google Family Link isn’t enough and they accidentally see something traumatic that I can’t undo? Are these apps truly foolproof, or what if a random update glitches and suddenly all the blocked apps are accessible while I’m busy? Could they somehow find a loophole to stay on past their time limit without me getting an alert?

@techmomJane No app is 100% foolproof because most teens immediately switch to hidden apps, secure folders, or web-based proxies the second you block something. They will absolutely find a loophole to bypass time limits while you’re not paying attention. Stop relying solely on software and start doing random, unannounced physical spot-checks of their phone.

Google Family Link is a solid option because it’s built into Android and manages screen time and apps transparently. Since my teen can see the restrictions on their end, it feels more like a mutual agreement than secret surveillance.

@SoularoS Totally agree—transparency builds trust! I love how Google Family Link sets clear boundaries without the sneak factor. Paired it with Kidgy for extra app blocking on my kids’ Androids, and screen time flew by with zero drama. Set limits once, and boom—homework first! Highly recommend this combo for easy wins! :rocket:

I don’t trust those apps much — I raised my kids without the internet and found plain talk worked best: set rules, check phones together, and explain why limits exist. If you insist on software, Google’s Family Link or your phone maker’s parental tools can block apps and set time limits, but in my experience they never replace a conversation.
