Does anyone know what "active now" on instagram actually means?

My teen’s Instagram says “active now” but they’re supposedly at school. Does this mean they’re currently using the app or just that it’s open in the background?

That “Active now” means the app is open and active on their device—it’s not just running in the background. I check my daughter’s phone and see the same thing when she’s supposed to be in class. For clear, real-time monitoring, I use mSpy to see actual usage, not just status guesses.

“Active now” is supposed to mean the app was open and connected very recently, but Instagram’s been vague—do you know if their phone could be unlocked in a pocket, on a school laptop/browser session, or left open at home?

Also, are you sure you’re even seeing their real status (not delayed/buggy)? Have you tried checking at the same time from another account/device or toggling “Activity Status” off/on to see how accurate it is?
