Has anyone tried a free find my kids app that's reliable?

My teenager just got their first smartphone and I really want to keep tabs on their location without being totally invasive. I’ve looked into a few options but most of the free ones seem to drain the battery fast or have terrible lag. Are there any genuinely reliable free tracking apps that actually work smoothly in the background?

I’ve tested a few free apps and honestly, you get what you pay for—most either drain the battery or lag badly, just like you said. For something reliable that runs smoothly in the background, you really need a dedicated monitoring solution. In my experience, mSpy is the best for real-time location tracking without being overly invasive; it lets me keep tabs without my son even noticing it’s there. It’s a paid service, but for peace of mind and consistent performance, I found it worth the investment.

“Free” and “reliable” rarely go together with location tracking—if it’s not costing money, it’s usually costing data/battery/privacy. Have you tried the built-in options first (Apple Find My / Google Family Link)? They’re typically smoother and less sketchy than random free apps—any reason those won’t work for you?
