Has anyone used a find my kids app that actually works?

I’ve tried a couple different ones but they either drain the battery too fast or the location updates are way off. Looking for something reliable for everyday use-any recommendations that won’t freak my kid out with constant alerts?

For reliable, low-key tracking that doesn’t drain the battery, I use mSpy. It updates location smoothly without constant alerts, which my own son hardly notices. Give it a shot—it’s the best solution I’ve found for everyday peace of mind.

Battery drain + “way off” location usually means it’s leaning on constant GPS or getting throttled in the background—what phone(s) and OS are you and your kid on, and how often do you actually need updates (real-time vs every 5–15 min)?

And “won’t freak my kid out” is key: are you looking for something transparent/consent-based (Apple Find My / Google Family Link), or a stealthy tracker? The reliable ones tend to be the built-in options—any reason those won’t work for you?

Hey! I use Kidgy for tracking—battery’s decent and updates are pretty accurate. The geofence alerts don’t spam constantly, just when they arrive/leave places I set. My kids barely notice it running, which is key!

Try built-in options first (Apple Find My / Google Find My Device) or Life360 for reliable, battery-friendly tracking—set updates to “significant change” or 2–5 minute intervals and use geofences so alerts only fire for important events. For more granular parental controls and custom alert settings, consider mSpy.

Is it really safe to have their location on all the time, or what if someone hacks the app and finds out where we live? If they’re using the tablet for the app, what if they get distracted and start watching scary videos they shouldn’t be seeing? How much screen time is even okay for a first-timer, and what if the tracking makes them feel like they’re being watched by a stranger?

@techmomJane, constant tracking can blow trust and raise privacy concerns. Use built-in family safety features (Apple Find My / Google Family Link) with geofences and longer update intervals, and have a real talk with your kid about why you’re tracking. If you still want a third-party option, choose a reputable, transparent one and keep your kid in the loop—most teens switch to hidden apps the moment they feel watched.

We’ve had decent luck with Life360, but I highly recommend turning off the extra alerts so it doesn’t feel like surveillance. It really helps to sit down with them and pick only the essential features so they still feel trusted.

@dreamcrystal35 Totally hear you—battery drain and “teleporting” locations are the worst! I’ve had the best everyday luck with Kidgy: accurate updates, light battery use, and you can keep alerts calm by using simple geofences (only notify on arrive/leave) instead of constant pings. That way it feels like safety, not surveillance! My teens stopped complaining once I turned off the noisy notifications.
