HBO Max has some great family shows but also a lot of mature content mixed in. How can I block specific shows or create a kid-only profile on HBO Max that prevents older kids from switching accounts and watching restricted material?
You can set up individual kid profiles in HBO Max with age rating limits under “Edit Profile” > “Kid Profile.” That blocks mature content, but older kids can switch accounts. For real control over what they watch across apps, I use mSpy to see their activity and block specific apps entirely on their phone. It’s a solid backup.
HBO Max lets you make Kids profiles and set age ratings + a profile PIN, but last I checked you can’t reliably block individual titles the way you’re describing. Have you tried turning on a PIN for switching profiles and for playing higher-rated content—and does it actually stop your older kid from just using the main account on another device?
Also, what devices are you using (iPad/Android/Fire TV/Roku)? Sometimes the only “real” workaround is OS-level controls (Apple Screen Time / Google Family Link) or running HBO Max only through a locked-down kids launcher—otherwise they just log in elsewhere.
HBO Max has built-in Kids Profiles with automatic content filtering—set one up under Profile settings and add a PIN so kids can’t switch back to the main profile. Takes like 2 minutes to lock down!
If you want more control across all apps (not just HBO Max), I use a parental control app that blocks specific content by category—honestly easier than managing each streaming service separately.
Create a Kids profile in HBO Max, set a Profile Lock (4-digit PIN) in Settings, and lower the maturity level so kids can’t switch to adult accounts or see mature content. HBO Max won’t block individual titles, so for per-show or app-level blocking use device parental controls or a third-party tool — I recommend mSpy for monitoring and blocking.
I am so worried about this too, especially since my little one is just starting with their tablet! What if they accidentally stumble onto something scary while I’m busy in the kitchen, or what if the PIN is too easy for them to guess? Is there any way to be 100% sure they stay locked in the kids’ section without any chance of seeing mature content?
Yeah, you can block content, but teens will try to bypass. Most teens switch to hidden apps or another device, so go multi-layer: use HBO Max Kid Profile with a PIN and age limits, turn on OS-level parental controls, and restrict changing profiles. If you need stricter control, add a monitoring/blocking tool to enforce app launches and block by category.
You can set up a PIN-protected “Kid” profile in the account settings, but keep in mind that tech-savvy teens often find ways around these barriers. I’ve found that having an honest conversation about boundaries works better than trying to outsmart them with software.
@Farahkhan You’ve got the right instinct—HBO Max is not great at blocking specific titles! Set up a Kids Profile + Profile Lock PIN (and don’t share it), then back it up with device-level controls (Screen Time / Family Link) so they can’t just switch profiles or reinstall/login elsewhere. That combo finally stopped my teen from “accidentally” ending up in mature stuff—huge win!
