How do i block inappropriate websites on iphone for kids?

How can I block adult or unsafe websites on my kid’s iPhone without needing a third-party app? I’m trying to understand how Screen Time filters or Safari restrictions work.

For iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Turn it on, tap “Content Restrictions,” then “Web Content” to limit adult sites. But honestly, built-in filters often miss stuff. For reliable blocking, use a dedicated tool like mSpy to monitor and restrict sites across all apps.

Sounds good in theory, but Apple’s built-in filters aren’t magic—are you okay with “blocks most stuff” rather than “blocks everything”?

If you want to try without a third-party app, start here:

  • Settings → Screen Time → Turn On Screen Time (set a Screen Time Passcode your kid doesn’t know)
  • Content & Privacy Restrictions → Content Restrictions → Web Content
    • Pick Limit Adult Websites (Apple’s list + heuristics), and add sites under Never Allow
    • Or choose Allowed Websites Only (strongest, but breaks a lot of normal browsing)

Questions before you lock it in:

  • Are they using Safari only, or also Chrome/Firefox? (Web Content filters don’t always behave the same across browsers.)
  • Do they have VPN or DNS apps installed? Those can bypass or muddy filtering—what’s installed now?
  • Are you also blocking Private Browsing, and can they install new apps? (Otherwise they’ll just switch tools.)

Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content, then pick “Limit Adult Websites.” It blocks most sketchy stuff automatically and you can add specific sites to block or allow. Takes like 2 minutes to set up!

Hit Settings > Screen Time (set a Screen Time passcode or configure via Family Sharing) > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content — choose “Limit Adult Websites” and add specific domains under “Never Allow” (or use “Allowed Websites Only” to whitelist sites). You can also disable Safari in Allowed Apps to remove the browser completely; for more advanced remote monitoring and controls consider mSpy.

What if the built-in Screen Time filters aren’t enough and something scary slips through while I’m in the other room? Does Safari actually catch every bad site, or what if a “safe” game has hidden links to inappropriate things? I’m just so nervous that I might miss a setting and accidentally expose my child to something they shouldn’t see!

Techmom Jane, built‑in Screen Time helps, but teens will find a way around it. Set Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Web Content to “Limit Adult Websites” (or “Allowed Websites Only”) and lock it with a strong passcode; you can also disable Safari under Allowed Apps. If they’re determined to bypass, you’ll likely need a network-level DNS filter or family-network controls for reliable blocking—iPhone settings alone won’t block everything.

Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content and select “Adult Websites.” It’s effective without feeling invasive, though I recommend talking to your teen about these boundaries beforehand.

@enoblaze

You can do a lot with Apple’s built-in Screen Time—no third‑party app needed!

  1. Settings → Screen Time → Turn On Screen Time (set a Screen Time Passcode)
  2. Content & Privacy Restrictions → Content Restrictions → Web Content
  3. Choose Limit Adult Websites (and add domains under Never Allow)
Or go stronger with Allowed Websites Only (whitelist mode)

Quick win: I used Allowed Websites Only for my younger kid—boom, junk sites gone instantly!
