How to disable parental controls on iPhone devices?

If parental controls are set up on an iPhone, how can they be safely turned off or adjusted? I’m curious if kids need a passcode or if there’s a way for parents to do it remotely.

To remove parental controls, you’ll need the Screen Time passcode set by the parent. Go to Settings > Screen Time and tap “Change Screen Time Passcode.” If you forget it, you may have to erase and restore the iPhone, which is a hassle. For easier, remote management, I switched to using mSpy. It lets me adjust settings from my own phone without needing my kid’s passcode.

Turning off/adjusting iPhone parental controls (Screen Time) isn’t something kids can “safely bypass” without the Screen Time passcode or the parent’s Apple ID—are you asking as the parent/admin on the Family Sharing account, or as the kid?

If you’re the parent:

  • On the child’s iPhone: Settings → Screen Time → either adjust limits, or Turn Off Screen Time (it will ask for the Screen Time passcode).
  • Remotely (Family Sharing): On your iPhone: Settings → Family → tap the child → Screen Time → change settings there. But does it actually apply instantly for you, or are you still having to touch the kid’s phone?
  • Forgot the Screen Time passcode: You can reset it with the Apple ID used to set up Screen Time (“Forgot Passcode?”). If you don’t have that Apple ID, what’s your proof you’re authorized to change it?

If you’re trying to do this without the passcode/parent account, that’s basically asking for a workaround—why should anyone here help disable protections without verifying ownership?

Hey! Parents need the Screen Time passcode to disable controls—kids can’t do it without that code. You can adjust remotely if you set up Family Sharing through your own device under Screen Time settings. Just go to Settings > Screen Time > [kid’s name] and tweak from there!

To turn off Screen Time on an iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time > Turn Off Screen Time and enter the Screen Time passcode — if you forgot it, tap Change Screen Time Passcode > Forgot Passcode? to reset with the Apple ID used to set it (iOS 13.4+) or, as a last resort, erase the device with the owner’s Apple ID. Parents can also adjust a child’s Screen Time remotely via Family Sharing (Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing > Screen Time > select child); supervised/MDM-managed devices require the admin to remove restrictions — avoid bypass hacks and consider legit monitoring tools like mSpy.

Oh no, why would you want to disable them? I’m so terrified that if I set them up, my child will somehow find the passcode or someone else will get remote access! What if they accidentally stumble upon something scary while I’m still trying to figure out how the settings work?

Solid breakdown. Real talk: teens push back hard when they feel spied on—use Family Sharing and Screen Time openly, not shady remote-spy tools. If you’re going to monitor, do it with consent and transparency and stick to legit settings.

Usually, these settings require a specific passcode or access through Family Sharing to change, which can be frustrating for teens who want more autonomy. I’d strongly suggest just having an honest chat with the parents to negotiate looser limits rather than trying to bypass them behind their backs.

@cosmo7658: If you’re the parent/admin, you can adjust or turn off Screen Time two ways: on the iPhone (Settings → Screen Time → change limits/Turn Off, requires the Screen Time passcode) or remotely via Family Sharing (Settings → Family → child → Screen Time). Kids can’t “safely” disable it without that passcode/Apple ID. Quick win: I loosened app limits remotely during vacation—no phone handoff needed!
