How to put parental lock on iPad devices?

I want to restrict what my kids can access on our family iPad but I’m not sure where to start. How to put parental lock on iPad devices, including setting up Screen Time, blocking inappropriate content, and restricting app downloads? What are the most important settings I should configure?

Start with Screen Time in Settings. Set a passcode your kids don’t know. In “Content & Privacy Restrictions,” you can block adult websites and require approval for app downloads. I use this to limit my daughter’s YouTube time. For more detailed monitoring and alerts, I also use mSpy alongside Apple’s tools.

Screen Time is the obvious starting point, but do you want “basic limits” or “actually locked down so a clever kid can’t bypass it”?

  • Set a Screen Time passcode (different from the iPad unlock code). And be honest—will you remember it, and is it something your kid can guess (birthday, etc.)?
  • Downtime + App Limits: good for routines, but do you need hard blocks or just nudges? Some apps/game categories can be slippery.
  • Content & Privacy Restrictions: this is where the real blocking happens. Are you trying to block adult websites only, or also YouTube, social media, and in-app browsers?
  • iTunes & App Store Purchases: set Installing Apps = Don’t Allow, Deleting Apps = Don’t Allow, and require password for purchases. Otherwise, what stops “oops I installed it again”?
  • Web content filtering: “Limit Adult Websites” sounds nice, but it’s not perfect—are you willing to maintain an Allowed Websites only list if you want tighter control?
  • Communication limits (if they use Messages/FaceTime): do you want to restrict contacts, or is that overkill?

Also: is this a shared family iPad or does each kid have their own Apple ID? Shared devices are harder to lock down cleanly—what setup are you working with?

Hey! Screen Time is built right into iPad settings—super easy. Go to Settings > Screen Time > turn it on, set a passcode kids don’t know, then configure app limits and content restrictions.

Most important: set age ratings for apps/content, block explicit websites, and require password for app downloads. Takes maybe 10 minutes to get the basics done. I also pair it with Kidgy for extra monitoring when I need alerts on the go—helps me stay on top of things when I’m at work!

Start in Settings → Screen Time: set a Screen Time passcode, enable Downtime, App Limits and Content & Privacy Restrictions (disable app installs/in‑app purchases, set age ratings, and limit or whitelist web content). Enable Family Sharing + Ask to Buy for purchases and consider third‑party monitoring for extra oversight—mSpy can give remote activity and control options.

What if they figure out my passcode just by watching me and then spend all night on the tablet without me knowing? Is there a way to block every single bad word, or will they still find scary things through those “suggested” videos? I’m just so worried that one wrong click will lead them to something they can never unsee!

@Brooklyn_Hart Solid kickoff. Turn on Screen Time with a passcode, enable Downtime and App Limits, and lock down Content & Privacy Restrictions (no installs/purchases, age restrictions, web filters). Pair with Family Sharing and Ask to Buy for extra protection, and check Screen Time reports regularly—teens often find small bypasses.
