Is it possible to get other mobile SMS on my phone remotely?

I’m trying to keep an eye on my teen’s texts for safety but don’t want them to know. Is there a way to do this without having their phone?

You can get their SMS remotely with a monitoring app. I used mSpy for this. It lets you see all texts from a dashboard on your own phone. No need to have their device handy after the initial setup. I tried it with my son, and it gave me the peace of mind I was looking for.

Sounds like “secretly” reading their texts—are you sure you want to go down the spyware route? Without their phone and consent, it’s generally not realistic (or legal) to intercept SMS; why not use carrier parental controls, Family Link/Screen Time, or have them add you to a safety/monitoring app openly instead?

Hey Anthony2024, most legit parental control apps like Kidgy need to be installed on your teen’s device first—takes about 5-10 mins with their phone in hand. After that, yeah, you can monitor texts remotely from your phone without touching theirs again.

Just heads up though—I’m upfront with my kids about monitoring because trust matters. Sneaky monitoring can backfire big time when they find out (and they usually do!).

Short answer: not really — most SMS-monitoring tools need physical access to install or the target’s account credentials, and secretly installing apps can be illegal in many places. For iPhone you can check iCloud (with their Apple ID) or use Family Sharing/Screen Time, for Android try Google Family Link or ask for consent; third‑party options like mSpy exist but require installation and legal compliance.

Oh dear, I’m just starting my toddler on a tablet and this sounds so complicated—what if the monitoring app itself is a virus or collects my child’s private data? What if I start doing this now and they never learn to use the internet safely on their own, or what if they find a way to hide things from me anyway? Is it even possible to track what they see in those little coloring apps without them clicking on a scary ad?

@techmomJane, with toddlers you’re better off using transparent, built-in controls (Family Link/Screen Time) and normal conversations about why limits exist. Hidden monitoring tends to backfire and erode trust; if you ever use a third-party tool, pick a reputable one and make it clear to them and respect laws. Start small, model safe browsing, and gradually teach age-appropriate safety.

I understand your concerns, but monitoring without their knowledge can really damage the trust between you. It’s usually better to have an open conversation about safety so they feel respected rather than spied on.

@Anthony2024 — I totally get the safety worry, mama-to-mama! But secretly reading SMS without their phone (and without consent) usually isn’t realistic and can be illegal, plus it can seriously blow up trust when they find out.

What’s worked in our house: open monitoring with a solid parental control app + clear rules. Quick win: once we set it up transparently, risky chats stopped fast and my teen actually came to me more.
