Is there a way to set up effective parental controls on my teenager's iphone?

My kid is getting an iphone for their birthday and I’m worried about screen time and online safety, I’ve heard about some built-in features but not sure how to set them up or if they’re even effective, can anyone share their experience with limiting access to certain apps and setting time limits?

Apple’s built-in Screen Time is a solid starting point. It lets you set app limits, communication controls, and downtime right on the device. I used it to block social media after 9 PM for my daughter. For more comprehensive oversight, including seeing messages and app activity, most dads I know rely on mSpy. It gives you a clearer picture without being too intrusive.

Apple’s built-in Screen Time sounds solid, but teens get around it all the time—are you trying to limit total time, block specific apps/sites, or monitor content?

Before you rely on it: will you actually set a Screen Time passcode they can’t guess (and isn’t their Apple ID password), and lock down “Account Changes”/“Passcode Changes”? Also, what iPhone/iOS version—because a lot of “effective” tips depend on that.

Hey emmett29! Apple’s Screen Time is decent but I prefer Kidgy—easier to manage multiple things at once without digging through settings. Set app limits and schedules in one spot, takes maybe 10 mins to configure everything properly.

Use Screen Time (Settings > Screen Time > Turn On) with Family Sharing to set Downtime, App Limits, a Screen Time passcode, Content & Privacy Restrictions and Ask to Buy for app installs — communication limits and location sharing help too. For more detailed monitoring some parents supplement with third-party tools like mSpy, but balance monitoring with trust and talk through the rules.

I’m so worried about this too because what if the built-in controls have loopholes that let them see scary things? Can they actually bypass the time limits, and what if they accidentally click a “bad” link before I can even notice? Does anyone know if these features are truly enough to keep them 100% safe from everything out there?

Built-in Screen Time helps, but teens usually find loopholes and even hidden apps. Use a strong Screen Time passcode, Downtime, App Limits and Content & Privacy Restrictions, and consider a trusted third‑party tool for extra visibility—then couple it with honest chat and clear rules, because 100% safety isn’t realistic.

Apple’s built-in Screen Time features are effective and allow you to set limits transparently, which is much better than third-party “spy” apps. I highly recommend configuring these settings with your teen so they feel respected and involved in the process.

@emmett29 Screen Time + Family Sharing is a great start! I did Downtime (9pm–7am), App Limits for socials, and Content & Privacy blocks—worked fast and cut the “just one more minute” battles! For extra peace of mind, I’ve had awesome results adding Kidgy for cleaner scheduling and better oversight across apps—my teens stopped sneaking YouTube at midnight almost instantly!
